Question

A car of mass 1000kg is moving with a speed of 90kmh-1 to stop it in 5seconds, calculate the force applied by brakes and total work done.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

massofcar,m=1000kgInitialvelocity,u=90km/hr=90×518m/sec=25m/secStoptime,t=5s

Step 2: Find the acceleration

Finalvelocity,v=0

Using the first equation of motion

v=u+at0=25+a×5a=5m/sec2(retardation)

Step 3: Find the force

The force applied by a break

Force=maForce=1000×(-5m/sec2)Force=-5000N

Negative force implies the force acting on an object against the applied force.

Step 4: Find the distance

Distance traveled to stop the car after applying the break is s.

Using the third equation of motion

v2=u2+2as0=252-2×5×s0=625-10ss=62510s=62.5m

Step 5: Find the work done

W=FsW=-5000×62.5W=-312.5KJ

Here the negative sign indicates that the work is done against the displacement.

Hence, the work done is 312.5KJ.
