Question

A car tyre is filled with nitrogen gas at 35psi at 27C°. It will burst if pressure exceeds 40psi. Find the temperature inC° at which the car tyre will burst?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1: Given data

Initial pressure in tyre, P1=35psi

Final pressure in tyre, P2=40psi

Initial temperature, T1=27C°=300K

Step 2: Find the temperature at which tyre will burst

Assuming that no. of moles of N2 gas and volume of tyre remains constant and pressure is changed by changing temperature.

Using,

PT=constantP1T1=P2T2T2=P2×T1P1T2=40psi×300K35psi343K

Step 3: Find the temperature inC°

Temperature in C° is calculated by

T2273=70C°

Hence, the temperature inC° at which the car tyre will burst is 70C°.
