Question

A car tyre has a volume of 10 litres when inflated. The tyre is inflated to a pressure of 3 atm at 170C with air. Due to driving the temperature of tyre increases to 470C.

(a) What would be the pressure at this temperature?
(b) How many litres of air measured at 470C and pressure of 1 atm should be let out to restore the tyre to 3 atm at 470C?

Solution

Given
(a)P1=3 atm
T1=17oC=290 k
V1=10 C
P2=?
T2=47oC=320 k

for a constant volume
P1P2=T1T2

P2=P1 T2T1

3×320290=3.31 atm

(b) pressure to be restored =3 atm
decrease in pressure =3.313
=0.31 atm

Let V be the volume that is let out
at constant temperature
P1 V1=P2 V2
0.31×10=1×V
V=3.1 L
