Question

A cationic colloidal electrolyte forms micelle at 104 M concentration in water. If 1 mm3 solution contains 1012 micelle structures, then the number of cations involved in one micelle is _______.
Note: Write the nearest integer.

Solution

1L corresponds to 104 moles which also corresponds to 106mm3.
Hence, 1mm3 contains 104106=1010 moles.
But this corresponds to 1012 micelles.
Thus, 1 micelle corresponds to 1022 moles.

This is equal to 1022×6.0×1023=60 cations.
Hence, the number of cations involved in 1 micelle is 60.
