Question

A cell at the telophase stage is observed by a student in a plant brought from the field. He tells his teacher that this cell is not like other cells at the telophase stage. There is no formation of the cell plate and thus the cell contains more number of chromosomes as compared to other dividing cells. This would result in:

Solution

The correct option is B Polyploidy
Cell division is characterized by karyokinesis (nuclear division) followed by cytokinesis (cytoplasmic division).

The process of cytokinesis is accomplished by cell plate formation in plant cells such that the parent cell gives rise to two daughter cells in which the chromosomes are equally distributed between the two daughter cells.

However, if the cell plate is not formed after telophase, it will give rise to a polyploid condition in which there are more than two sets of chromosomes in the cell.

Hence, option B is correct.

Aneuploidy is the condition in which the cell has an abnormal number (either excess or deficit in copies) of a particular chromosome.

Somaclones are genetically identical plants produced by the technique of tissue culture. However, mutations can cause variations in these plants and it is referred to as somaclonal variation.

Polyteny is a condition in which DNA is continuously replicated without separating, resulting in a giant chromosome.
