Meiosis occurs in two stages: meiosis I and meiosis II. During meiosis I, homologous chromosomes separate and the number of chromosomes in daughter cells get reduced to one half. This division is known as reduction division.
During meiosis II, centromere splits and the chromosome number remains the same in the daughter cells and hence, meiosis II is known as equational division.
If a cell has 28 chromosomes, then after meiosis I the daughter cells will have 14 chromosomes. While after meiosis II they will have 14 chromosomes as meiosis II is an equational division.
