Question

A cell of emf 1V and internal resistance r = 1ohm is connected to an external resistance R = 4ohm. The ammeter A measures the current in the circuit and the voltmeter V measures the terminal voltage across the cell. What will be the readings of the ammeter and voltmeter when: (i) the key K is open, (ii) the key K is closed.

Solution

Dear Student,

r=1 ohm (internal resistance of cell.).R= 4 ohm (External Resistance of circuit).E=1 v (EMFof cell.).Case 1) open key:no current will flow when key is open, so there wont be any reading in ameter and boltmeter.Case2) Closed key: current I will flow through the circuit.Let v be the potenttial difference across the terminal.V=E-Ir.IR=E-Ir.I×4=1-I×1I=15=0.2A.V=E-Ir=1-0.2×1=0.8v.Ans).. The ameter will read 0.2A and the voltmeter will read 0.8V.

Regards.
