Question

A certain amount of a gas is filled in a tank of volume 63000litre and 42 atm. If this gas is transferred to cylinders of volume of 1260l each, find the number of cylinders that can be filled with the given gas at STP :(assume complete evacuation of cylinder)

Solution

Boyles Law
At constant temperature, pressure is directly propertional to volume of gas. P1V1=P2V2
V1=63000 litre
P1=42 atm
at STP,
V2=1260 l P2=1 atm
now applying boyle's law,
For "n" cylinders,
P1V1=(n)(P2V2)
(42)×(63000)=n(1260×1)
n=2100.
2100 cylinders can be filed
