Question

A certain gene that is necessary for formation of antibody that gives resistance against a very rare kind of infection in humans, is present on a sex chromosome. On testing a large population it was seen that number of females who have the infection is more than the number of males. This means that the gene is present on the __ chromosome.

Solution

The rare infection is mostly seen in females. If we consider that the gene is present on the X chromosome, then more number of females would have been resistant to the infection since they have two X chromosomes. This means that females would have at least one working gene, and males would have been more susceptible to the infection. However in this case, since males are more resistant than females, it means that the gene is present on the Y chromosome and thus, most of the males are resistant to the infection.
