Solution

Let the equation be m=m0eαt

A certain radioactive material has a one-fourth of its life in 4000 years.

So m04=m0e4000α
14=e4000α

Applying log both sides
log(14)=log(e4000α)

2log2=4000α

α=log22000 (1)

Now time required for a given amount to be one-tenth of original mass can be found by:

m010=m0eαt
110=eαt

Applying log both sides

log(110)=log(eαt)

log(10)=αt

log(10)=αt

Substituting (1)

log(10)=log(2)2000t
