Question

A charge Q is distributed over two concentric hollow spheres of radii r and R (>r) such that the surface densities are equal. Find the potential at the common centre.

Open in App
Solution

Let q1 & q be the charge on 1st & 2nd sphere
(σ) surface charge density =charge on spheresurface area
σ1=q14πr2
σ2=q24πR2
σ1=σ2=σ
q14πr2=q24πR2=σ
q1r2=q2R2-----(2)
q1+q2=Q------(1) & (2)
we get
q1=Qr2R2+r2q2=QR2R2+r2-----(3)
Potential at the centre will be due to both the spheres
V=V1+V2
v=lq1r+kq2R put value from (3)
v=kQr2+R2(r+R)
