Question

A charged spherical particle of radius 5000 Å moves with constant horizontal speed of 2 cm/s in a horizontal electric field of 6.28×106 V/m. Find the number of excess electrons in it (π=3.14). The surrounding medium is air with coefficient of viscosity η=1.6×105 N-s/m2. (Neglect gravity)

Solution

Given that the particle moves with constant speed, so net force is zero.
Fviscous=Fe
6πηrv=qE=neE,
where n is number of electrons
6×3.14×1.6×105×5×107×2×102=n×1.6×1019×6.28×106
n=3
