Question

A chemist has 4 samples of artificial sweetener, he performed certain experiments and noted the following observations:
(i) A and D both from blue-voilet colour with ninhydrin.
(ii) Lassaigne extract of C gives positive AgNO3 test and negative Fe4[Fe(CN)6]3 test.
(iii) Lassaigne extract of B and D gives positive sodium nitroprusside test.
Based on these observations,which option is correct?

A
A: Alitame; B: Saccharin;

Solution

The correct option is D
A: Aspartame; B: Saccharin;
C: Sucralose D: Alitame

(A)Aspartame;
(B)Saccharine;
(C)Sucralose;
(D)Alitame;

(i) All α amino acids on treatment with ninhydrin (2,2-dihydroxyindane-1,3-dione) give purple colouration. The purple coloures complex is Ruhemann's purple. This test is called ninhydrin test
Hence, A and D should be amino acids.

(ii) Positive test of lassaigne extract with AgNO3 confirms the presence of halogen in the compound (C). Negative test of extract with sodium nitroprusside ensure the absence of nitrogen the compound (C). Hence, it is a sugar with halogen atom.

(iii) Lassaigne extract of B and D give Nitroprusside test which indicates the presence the nitrogen.
Saccharin has nitrogen atom and obviously amino acids have nitrogen atom.

Hence, option (d) is the correct answer.
