Question

A child is swinging a swing . Maximum and minimum heights of swing from earth's surface are 2 metres and 0.75 metres . What is the maximum velocity of the swing. ( g = 10 m / seconds squire ) .

Solution

The vertical height in between the highest and lowest point of the swing= 2 - 0.75 = 1.25 mPotential energy at highest point of the swing= mgh =m × 10 × 1.25 = 12.5 mWhere m is the mass of the child and the swing, g acceleration due to gravity and h the height by which swing raises.Maximum kinetic energy at the lowest point of the swing = 12 m v2But according to the law of conservation of energyenergy at the heighst point = energy at the lowest pointthus 12 mv2 = 12.5 mi.e. v2 = 25 v = 5 ms
