Question

A choke coil is needed to operate an arc lamp at 160 V (rms) and 50 Hz. The lamp has an effective resistance of 5 Ω when running at 10 A (rms). If the inductance of the chock coil is 76k1000π H, the value of k is

(integer only)

Solution

For lamp,

(Vrms)R=irmsR=10×5=50 V

In series,

(Vrms)2=(Vrms)2R+(Vrms)2L

(Vrms)L=(Vrms)2(Vrms)2R=(160)2(50)2

(Vrms)L=152 V

As, (Vrms)L=(irms)XL=(irms)(2πfL)

L=(Vrms)L(2πf)(irms)

Substituting the values, we get

L=152(2π)(50)(10)=1521000π H

Given, L=76k1000π H

76k=152

k=2
