In the circle shown above, O is the centre.
Radius, OA = 5 cm
Chord AB = 6 cm
OM ⊥ AB, which bisects it at M.
∴AM=12 AB=12×6 cm=3 cm
Now, in right ΔOMA,
OA2=AM2+OM2 (Pythagoras' Theorem)
⇒ (5)2=(3)2+OM2
⇒ 25=9+OM2⇒ OM2=25−9=16
∴ OM=√16=4 cm
A chord of length 6 cm is drawn on a circle of radius 5 cm. Calculate its distance from the centre of the circle.
A chord of length 8 cm is drawn in a circle of radius 5 cm. Calculate its distance from the centre of the circle.
