Question

A circular disc of mass 3kg is rotating freely in horizontal plane about vertical axis passing through its centre at the rate of 2.4rotation/sec. Two bodies each of mass 0.5kg are gently attached to the rim of disc due to which its radius of gyration is increased by 20%, then its angular velocity is:

Solution

The correct option is D 75 rpm
Two bodies output I1=3R22
Radius of gyration = k is increased by 20 .
k1=12R
k2=1.22R,new I2=4×(1.2R2)2
Angular momentum is conserved.
I1W2=I2w2
3R22×2.4=4×(1.22)2R2 w2
w2=1.2 rps
w2=1.2×60 rpm.
=75 rpm
