Question

A circular island has a perimeter of 100 Km. Three ships are at a point near the island. Two ships move in clockwise direction around the island at a speed of 10 Km/h and the 3rd ship moves at a speed of 5 Km/h in anticlockwise direction.Neglecting the distance between the ships find when the ships will meet.

Solution

Dear Student,
Since the first and second ships are at the same speed and in same direction they will never meet.
lets say if the initial distance between the ship 1 and 2 is x km, it will remain same at any time.
However, ship 3 will meet both the first and 2nd ship individually at different point.

Considering the ship to be very near to the island. the circumfurance of island is same as the path of the ship.

Lets say the distance between ship 1 and 3 is x km and ship 1 and 2 is y km.The relative speed for both the case will be V=10+5 =15km/hr.ships will meet at t=Distance velocityt1=x15hrand t2=y15hr.
