Question

A circular loop of string rotates about its axis on a frictionless horizontal plane at a uniform rate so that the tangential speed of any particle of the string is V. If a small transverse disturbance is produced at a point of the loop, with what speed (relative to the string) will this disturbance travel on the string?

Open in App
Solution

Step 1 : Given data

R= Radius of the loop

m=mass per unit length of the string =mRdθ

ω = angular velocity

V= linear velocity of the string

Step 2 : To find the velocity

The force for a small portion in the ring dF=mRdθω2R

Centrifugal force =mRdθω2R

Element length =Rdθ

dF=2mR2dθω2sinθ

F=0π22mR2ω2sinθdθ=2mR2ω2-cosθπ2=2mR2ω21-02T=2mR2ω2T=mR2ω2

Transverse vibration's velocity is given by ,

V=TmV=mR2ω2mV=Rω

Then the speed of the disturbance is Rω

Hence the answer is Rω
