Question

A circular metal plate expands under heating so that its radius increases by k%. Find the approximate increase in the area of the plate, if the radius of the plate before heating is 10 cm.

Open in App
Solution

Let the radius of plate is r and area is A.
Given that Δrr×100=k
Δr=kr100
Area of plate, A=πr2
dAdr=ddr(πr2)=2πr
Now, approximate increase in area of plate,
ΔA(dAdr)×Δr
ΔA2πr×kr100
ΔA2kπ100×102[r=10cm(given)]
ΔA2kπ
Approximate increase in the area of plate is 2kπcm2
