A circular object when kept between a small source of light and a screen, casts a sharp shadow on the screen. What could be the phenomenon responsible?
Rectilinear Propagation of light
Shadow is the absence of light. In any shadow region, no light ray coming from the source falls on the screen. In a homogeneous transparent medium, light travels in straight line, this phenomenon is called as rectilinear propagation. This phenomenon is responsible for the sharp casting of the shadows. If light travels in random zig- zag direction and not in straight line then light from the source will send around the object and we shouldn't get any shadow region at all.
