Question

A circus is a form of entertainment that features many different spectacular acts. These acts may include skilled and daring performers, highly trained animals, and funny clowns. Circus acts often perform in a circle, or ring, with the audience on all sides.

On sunday your parents took you to a circus where you saw a circus tent consist of a cylindrical base and a conical roof mounted on it. The radius of the cylinder is 40 m. The total height of the tent is 65 m and that of the cone is 30 m. Then find
i) The volume of the tent.
ii) The area of the cloth used for making it.

Solution

Height of tent = Height of cylinder + Height of cone
Given: Height of the cone (h) = 30 m
Height of the cylinder (H) = 65 - 30 = 35 m
Radius of the cylinder = Radius of the cone = 40 m

i) To find: Volume of the circus tent.

Volume of the circus tent = Volume of cylinder + Volume of cone
=πr2H+πr2h3=πr2(H+h3)=227×(40)2×(35+303)=227×1600×(35+10)=227×1600×45=226285.714 m3 ii)To find: The area of the cloth used for making the circus tent.Slant height of the cone ,l=h2+r2=302+402=50 m

Now, area of cloth required in making the tent
= Curved surface area of cylinder + Curved surface area of cone
=2πrH+πrl=πr(2H+l)=227×40(70+50)=227×40×120=15085.714 m2
