Question

A clock pendulum made of invar has a period of 0.53 s, at 20C. If the clock is used in a climate where the temperature averages to 30C, how much time does the clock lose in each oscillation?

Solution

The correct option is C 2.25×106s
We know that time period of a pendulum is given by
t=2πlg

Thus, for small variations in l and g, the time period varies as
Δtt=12(ΔllΔgg)

It is given that g is a constant and t=0.5 s

We know that Δl occurs due to change in temperature and Δl=l×α×ΔT

We have ΔT=10C

Thus, Δll=αΔT=9×107×10=9×106

Thus, Δtt=12Δll=92×106

But, t=0.5. Thus, Δt=0.5×4.5×106=2.25×106 s
