Question

A closed storage tank is to be constructed using steel sheet the height of the tank is 4.5m and the diameter is 4.2m .given that 1/12th is the steel is wasted, find how much sheet is required.(in this question how to remove 1/12th part in working and what is the rest of the workin)

Solution

Given height = 4.5 m and radius = 2.1 m.
Lateral or curved surface area = 2πrh
= 2 x 22/7 x 2.1 x 4.5
= 59.4 m^2
Total surface area of the closed cylindrical storage tank = 2πr (r + h)
=2 x 22/7 x 2.1x (4.5m + 2.1m)
= 87.12 m^2
Area of steel sheet wasted in making the tank
= (1 / 12) x Total surface area
= (1 / 12) x 87.12 m^2
= 7.26 m^2
Actual area of the sheet used for making the tank. = Total surface of the tank + Area of steel sheet wasted in making the tank
= 87.12 m^2 + 7.26 m^2
= 94.38 m^2
