Question

A closed system receives 200 kJ of heat at constant volume. It then rejects 100 kJ of heat while it has 50 kJ of work done on it at constant pressure. If an adiabatic process can be found which will restore the system to its initial state, the work done by the system during this process is

Solution

The correct option is C 150 kJ
Given, that system is closed one
We can infer that Δunet=0
System is going through isochoric, isobaric and adiabatic process.
Δu1+Δu2+Δu3=0(1)
In isochoric process, W=0Δu1=Q1(2)
In isobaric process, Δu2=Q2W2(3)
In adiabatic process, ΔQ=0Δu3=W3(4)
Using (1),(2),(3)&(4) we get,
Q1+Q2W2W3=0
200+(100+50)W3=0
W3=150 kJ
