Question

A closed vesseln 10 L in volume contains a diatomic gas under a pressure of 105N/m2. What amount of heat should be imparted to the gas to increase the pressure in the vessel five times ?

Open in App
Solution

Given : P=105 N/m2 V=10 L
Using ideal gas equation : PV=RT (n=1)
105×10=0.0821×T T=121.8K
Now pressure is increased to 5 times i.e P=5×105 N/m2
As V=constant, PT=PT

105121.8=5×105T T=609K
Also ΔT=TT=609121.8=487.2K
For diatomic gas, γ=1.4

Heat supplied at constant volume Qv=RΔTγ1
Qv=8.314×487.21.41=10126.5 J
