Question

A colourless mixture of two substances, (A) and (B) (excess) is soluble in H2O, separately. (A) turns blue litmus red and (B) turns red litmus blue. (A) gives white ppt. with (B), which dissolves in excess of (B) forming (C). (A) when placed in moist air gives fumes and can form dimer. (A) gives white ppt. with NH4Cl and NH4OH soluble in (B). (A) also gives white precipitate with AgNO3 soluble in NH4OH.
Thus, dimer formed has _______ bonding .

Solution

The correct option is D covalent and coordinate
The colourless mixture contains AlCl3 as A and NaOH as B which is present in excess.

AlCl3 is acidic in nature. It turns blue litmus red.
NaOH is alkaline in nature. It turns red litmus blue.

AlCl3 reacts with NaOH to give a white ppt of Al(OH)3 which is soluble in more NaOH to form Al(OH)4

AlCl3+3NaOHAl(OH)3(white)+3NaCl

Al(OH)3+NaOHNaAl(OH)4

With moist air, AlCl3 gives fumes of HCl.

AlCl3+3H2OAl(OH)3+3HCl

AlCl3 forms dimer Al2Cl6 which contains covalent and coordinate bonds.

Therefore, option D is correct.
