Solution

The major defects associated with a common hydrometer that is set up in a laboratory are:

  1. It cannot record the minor changes in the density because it is not very sensitive.
  2. If placed in a very dense liquid, it does not float in an upright position because of the increased upthrust.
  3. If placed in too light liquid, it sinks, because the test tube does not displace enough liquid to make it float.
