Question

A compact car gets 20 miles per litre on the highway. Gasoline contains 84.0% carbon by mass and has a density of 0.80 g ml1. The mass of CO2 produced (in g) during a 50 mile-trip is:
  1. 6160

Solution

The correct option is A 6160
Gasoline contains 84.0% C by mass (with density 0.80g ml1)
For 20 miles 1 L of gasoline is required
For 50 miles x L of gasoline is required
x=2050 = 25=2.5 L
For 50 molar we need 2.5 L gaseous Gasoline which has 84.0% of carbon by mass
84 g carbon in 100 g gasoline with density = 0.80 g ml1
∴ mass of gasoline
D = massvolume
0.80=mass of gasoline2.5×103
mass of gasoline = 0.80×2.5×103=2000 g
100 g gasoline contains 84 g Carbon
2000 g contains y g Carbon
y=84×2000100=1680 g
C + O2CO2
12 g C 44 g CO2
1680 gm Carbon will form x g of CO2
x=16.80×4412=6160 g of CO2 is formed
