Question

A compound is formed by 24 g of X and 64 g of oxygen. If atomic mass of X = 12 and O = 16, calculate the simplest formula for the compound.

Open in App
Solution

mass of oxygen = 64g.

Atomic mass of oxygen given as 16. Thus, atoms of oxygen = 64 over 16= 4.

mass of X = 24g.

Atomic mass of X given as 12. X is therefore carbon. Number of carbon atoms = 24 over 12= 2.

The ratio between them is 2: 4 = 1: 2

The simplest atomic formula is, therefore, CO2
