Question

a compound is formed by three elements P, Q, R. Atoms of the element R form cup, atoms of P occupy 2/3rd of tetrahedral voids and Q atoms at the edge centre of the cube. What is the formula of the compound?

Open in App
Solution

No. of R atoms per unit cell in ccp lattice=4
No. of tetrahedral voids= 2*4=8
No. of tetrahedral voids occupied by P= 2/3*8=16/3
number of Q atoms at edge center of ccp is 1
so the formula of the compound will be R4P16/3Q1
multiplying by subscripts by 3 we will get R12P16Q3.
so the formula of the compound will be R12P16Q3
