Question

A compound is made up of 3 elements A,B,C. 'A' atoms are involved in 3d CCP, P atoms occupy all the tetrahedral and C atoms all the octahydral voids. Determine the formula of the compounds

Solution

Dear student,

as we know that in CCP (Cubic close packing) no. of octahedral voids are equal in number of atoms forming CCP .
as given:-
A atoms involved in CCP and C atoms involved in octahedral voids.
as mentioned above A = C so ratio of A and C will be 1:1
while the tetrahedral voids are always double in number of octahedral voids
so we can say -
ratio of atoms in tetrahedral and octahedral will be 2:1
overall ratio will be;
A:2B:C
so formula of the compound w = AB2C or ACB2
