Question

A compound X does not give N2 on heating. Its aqueous solution when heated with caustic soda liberate a gas Y which turns red litmus blue. Heating of alkaline solution of X is continued to expell the gas Y completely. However residual solution again liberates the gas Y when heated with zinc powder. If X=NHxNOy and Y=NHz. Determine the value of x ,y and z.

Solution

The correct option is A x=4,y=3,z=3
Ammonium nitrate decomposes on heating to give N2O gas(but nitrogen gas is not liberated)
Aqueous solution of Ammonium nitrate when heated with caustic soda( common name for sodium hydroxide ) liberates ammonia gas( basic in nature and hence turns red litmus to blue)
Hence x=4 , y=3 ,z=3
