Question

A compound x is a constitutent of baking powder. it is used as an antaacid . where x is heated it gives out a gas Y which when passed through lime water turns it milky and salt Z is formed which isthe main constitutent of washing powder . Identify the X Y Z write balanced chemiccal equations for the reactions involved.

Solution

Compound X is sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3

on heating sodium bicarbonate forms sodium carbonate, water and carbondioxide

the equation is as follows...

1.NaHCO3 -------> Na2 CO 3 + H2O + CO2

therefore Z is sodium carbonate and the gas Y evolved is carbondioxide.

Sodium carbonate after recrystallization gives sodium washing soda which is used to remove hardness of water. The equation can be written as follows..

2. Na2CO3+10H2O --------------> Na2CO3.10H2O

When carbondioxide(gas Y) Is passed though lime water it turns milky the equation can be written as follows..

3.Ca(OH)2 + CO2 ---------> CaCO3+H2O
