Question

A concave mirror produces three times enlarged image of an object placed at 10cm in front of it. Calculate the focal length of the mirror.

Solution

Step 1: Given that

Size of image(hi) = Three times the size of the object(ho)

hi = 3ho

hiho=3

Object distance(u) = -10cm

{Note: All the distance to the left of the pole of a spherical mirror is negative(-) and the distances taken to the right of the pole are positive(+).}

Step 2: Formula used:

1. Magnification of a mirror(m)= =heightofimage(hi)heightofobject(ho)=-vu

(Note: Negative magnification suggests a real and inverted image whereas a positive magnification suggests a virtual and erect image.)

2. Object distance(u), image distance(v) and focal length(f) of a mirror are related as:

1v+1u=1f

Step 3: Calculation of focal length (f) of the concave mirror:

m=hiho=-vu3=-vuv=-3uv=-3×10cmv=-30cm

Now,

1-30cm+1-10cm=1f-130-110=1fOr,1f=-1-3301f=-430f=-304f=-152cm

Thus, the focal length of the concave mirror is 152cm.
