Question

A conducting rod PQ of length 5 m oriented as shown in figure is moving with velocity 2 ^i m/s, without rotation, in a uniform magnetic field of (3^j+4^k) Tesla. The induced emf (in V) in the rod is

Solution

Given,

Velocity of rod PQ, v=(2^i) m/s

Magnetic field, B=(3^j+4^k) T

From the figure, we can see that,

Length vector for rod PQ,

l=(5cos53^i+5sin53^j) m/s

l=(3^i+4^j) m/s

The induced emf is given by,

E=l(v×B)

Here,
v×B=^i(00)^j(80)+^k(60)

=6^k8^j

E=(3^i+4^j).(6^k8^j)=32 V

Considering the magnitude only, |E|=32 V

Accepted answers: 32, 32.0, 32.00
