Given:
Initial velocity, u=0 ms1,
Distance the helmet fell, h=78.4 m
Acceleration due to gravity, g=9.8 ms2
Total time taken for the sound to be heard, t=4.23 s

Let t1 be the time taken by the helmet to reach the ground.

From second equation of motion,
s=ut+12×at2
h=12gt21
78.4=12×9.8×t21
t1=4 s

The time taken by sound to travel,
t2=tt1
t2=4.234=0.23 s

From definition of speed, the speed of sound in air is:
v=st2
v=78.40.23
v341 ms1
