Question

A container having a small orifice in the bottom is filled with water and kerosene as in figure. Neglecting the viscosity, find the velocity of the water flow (in m/s upto 2 decimals) if the thickness of the water layer is h1=30 cm and that of the kerosene layer is h2=20 cm.
Take ρwater=1gcm3, ρkerosene=0.80gcm3

Solution

Applying Bernoulli's equation for a point 1 just inside the orifice and point 2 just outside the orifice.
Patm+ρwgh1+ρkgh2=Patm+12ρwv2 (Just inside the orifice velocity is negligible)
v=2(h2ρkρw+h1)g
v=2(0.2(0.8)+0.30)9.8=9.016
v=3 m/s
