A container of negligible heat capacity contains 1 kg water. It is connected by a steel rod of length 1 m and area of cross section 1 m2 to a large steam chamber which is maintained at 100C. If the initial temperature of water is 0C, find the time (in seconds) after which it reaches 50C .

Thermal current, H=(100T)R
where R = thermal resistance.
R=LkA ......(1)
For increase in temperature of water from TT+dT
H=dQdt=mSdTdt
100TR=mSdTdt
Integrating on both sides, we get
500dT100T=t0dtmSR
ln(10050)+ln(1000)=tmSR
ln2=tmSR
t=mSRln2

From (1), we get,
t=LkAmSln2
Given, m=1 kg; L=1 m and A=1 m2
We can write the above equation as,
t=Skln 2 sec
Thus, option (a) is the correct answer.
