A convex lens forms a real image three times larger than the object on a screen. Object and screen are moved until the image formed becomes twice the size of the object. If the shift of the object is 6 cm then find the distance by which screen is shifted.

The correct option is A 36 cm
From the data given in the question, we can draw a schematic diagram of image formation as given below.


Using lens formula,

1v1u=1f

With sign convention, let us substitute the data given in the diagram,

13x1x=1f

or, 43x=1f.....(1)

Similarly,

12(6+x)1(6+x)=1f

or , 32(6+x)=1f....(2)

From (1) and (2) we get,

43x=32(6+x)

9x=48+8x

x=48 cm

Shift of screen (x)=|2(6+x)3x|

Substituting the value of x we get,

x=3×482(6+48)=36 cm

Hence, option (a) is the correct answer.
