Question

A coordinate bond has the properties of both (I) _____ and (ii) _____ bonds. Therefore, it is called (iii) _____ bond. The atom which provides the electron pair for the formation of a coordinate bond is called (iv) ____ and the atom or ion sharing the donated electron pair is called (v) _____.

Solution

Coordinate bond

  1. The bond formed by sharing a lone pair of one atom with another atom is called a coordinate bond.
  2. The atom which shares the lone pair is called the donor atom and the atom which accepts the lone pair is called the acceptor.
  3. Since the electron pair is shared so its covalent coordinate bond and the compound formed may have a positive or negative charge.
  4. It is also called a dative bond.

So, a coordinate bond has the properties of both covalent and ionic bonds. Therefore, it is called dative bond. The atom which provides the electron pair for the formation of a coordinate bond is called the donor and the atom or ion sharing the donated electron pair is called the acceptor.
