Question

A copper ball of density 8.6 gcm3, 1 cm in diameter is immersed in oil of density 0.8 gcm3. What is the charge in μC on the ball, if it remains suspended in an electric field of intensity 3600 Vm acting in upward direction. (Answer the nearest integer)

Solution

Given
density of copper ball ρCu=8.6 gcm3=8.6×103 kgm3
ρoil=0.8gcm30.8×103 kgm3
E = 3600 Vm,r=12 cm=0.5×102 m
Fnet= qE
From equilibrium
qE +43πR3×ρoil×g=43πR3×ρCu×g
q=43×3.14×(0.5×102)3(7.8)×103×10E
q=43×3.14×(0.5×102)3(7.8)×103×103600
q=43×3.14×7.8×0.125×1023600
q = 1.1×105 C
= 11×106 C
= 11 μ C
