If the percentage of individuals of a given age or age group is plotted for the population, an age pyramid is formed. The age distribution of males and females are shown in a combined diagram. A population on the basis of its age is divided into three groups, namely the pre-reproductive age group, reproductive age group, and post-reproductive age group. The population size is shown on the x-axis (horizontal) and age-groups on the y-axis (vertical). Since the country has adopted measures to control population growth graph ‘B’ is an earlier one while ‘A’ is a more recent graph which shows a slight reduction in the growth rate. This is evident from the fact that in the pyramid A the proportion of pre-reproductive individuals has reduced in comparison to that of pyramid B.
