A Crane had DDT level of 5 ppm in its body. What would happen to the population of such birds?

Solution

Some toxic substances aren't metabolized or excreted from an organism's body. This leads to an accumulation of these intoxicants at successive trophic levels, this is called as biomagnification. In a crane having 5 ppm of DDT concentrated in its body, calcium metabolism is disrupted. This causes thinning and weakening of eggshells and premature breaking of eggs resulting in a significant decrease in their population.
