Question

A CU triaxial compression test was performed on saturated sand at a cell pressure of 100 kPa. The ultimate deviator stress was 350 kPa and the pore pressure at the peak stress was 40 kPa (suction). Estimate the total and effective stress shear strength parameters.

Solution

The correct option is A 33.75
Given,

Total Stresses

σ3=100kN/m2

σ1σ3=350kN/m2

σ1100=350

σ1=450kN/m2

u = 40 kN/m2

(Because of suction)

Effective stresses, ¯¯¯σ3=σ3u

= 100 -(-40)

=140kN/m2

¯¯¯σ1=σu

=450 -(-40)

=490 kN/m2

Calculation of total stress shear strength parameters

σ1=σ3 tan2(45+ϕ2)+2c tan(45+ϕ2)

For sand, C = 0

σ1=σ3 tan2(45+ϕ2)

450=100 tan2(45+ϕ2)

ϕ=39.52

c = 0

Calculation of effective stress shear strength parameters

¯¯¯σ1=¯¯¯σ3 tan2(45+ϕ2)+2c tan(45+ϕ2)

For sand, C' = 0

¯¯¯σ1=¯¯¯σ3 tan2(45+ϕ2)

490=140 tan2(45+ϕ2)

ϕ=33.75

c' = 0
