Question

A cube of ice floats partly in water and partly in kerosene oil. Find the ratio of the volume of ice immersed in water to the volume in k.oil.

Specific gravity of k.oil 0.8

And of ice 0.9

Open in App
Solution

wieght of ice cube should be equal to the sum of wieght of oil replaced and wight of water replaced by ice cube

let the volume in water is v1 and in oil is v2

Weight of ice cube = weight of water + weight of oil

0.9 * g * (v1+v2) =1* g*v1 + 0.8 * g* v2

or 0.9(v1/v2 +1) = v1/v2 +0.8

or v1/v2 =1
