Question

A current of 0.5 A is drawn by a filament of an electric bulb for 10 minutes.Find the amount of electric current that flows through the circuit and find the elctrons

Open in App
Solution

From the data given above you can find the amount of electric charge that passes through the circuit,
Using the equation,
Q = I * t (or) I = Q/t

(since current is defined as rate of flow of electric charge)
where Q = electric charge (Coulombs)
I = current (Ampere)
t = time taken (seconds)

Given; I = 0.5 A, t = 10 min = 600 s

Hence Q = I * t = 0.5 x 600
= 300 C

To find the number of electons for the charge Q , we use the formula---------
Q = ne
Where,
Q = charge,
n = no.of electrons and
e = charge on 1 electron and that is approx. 1.6 x 10^(-19) in negatively.

n = Q/e

n = 300C / 1.6 x 10^(-19)

n = 187.5 x 10^(19) electrons

= 1.87 x 10^(21) electrons
