  1. According to the right-hand thumb rule, “when the thumb points in the direction of the electric current, the direction in which the rest of the fingers curl gives the direction of the induced magnetic field” as depicted by the diagram shown above.
  2. From the above diagram, it is clear that if we point our thumb in the direction of the current i.e “east to west”, then our fingers curl in the “north-south” direction which is the direction of the magnetic field.
  3. From the diagram, it is clear that for a point “P” directly below the power line, the direction of the magnetic field will be from “north to south”.

Hence, the direction of the magnetic field at a point directly below the power line is from north to south.
