Question

A cylinder and wedge of same masses with a vertical face, touching each other, move along two smooth inclined planes forming the some angle α and β respectively with the horizontal. Determine the force of normal N (in newton) exerted by the wedge on the cylinder, neglecting the friction between them. If m=1(3) kg, α=600,β=300 and g=10m/s2

Solution

Since wedge is at equilibrium
N=mgcosα= force exerted by wedge on cylinder)
N=13×10×12=53N
Normal force =53N
