Question

A cylinder having a piston contains 1 kg of methane gas at 100 kPa and 20C. The gas is compressed reversibly to a pressure of 800 kPa. If the process is polytropic with exponent n=1.15, then the work required (in kJ) is (nearest integer value)
[Take R for methane =0.518 kJ/kg K and 80.13=1.31]

Solution

For a polytropic process,
e know that PVx = constant ..........(1)
Given, x=1.15.
To write (1) in terms of T and P we use ideal gas equation PV=nRT
From this we get,
P 1x T x= constant
T1Px1x1=T2Px1x2
From the data given in the question we get,
T2=293×(800100)0.151.15
=293×1.31
=384 K
We know that work done during a polytropic process is given by W=nR(T2T1)1x
Using the given data we get,
W=1×0.51(384293)11.15=309.4 kJ309 kJ
So, work required is 309 kJ
